The Virginia Discovery Museum is a nonprofit community resource, and we rely on the generosity of friends and neighbors, businesses, organizations, and foundations to inspire lifelong learning among children of all backgrounds in the Charlottesville-Albemarle region. Your support for our mission helps provide our youngest community members with educational and playful opportunities for discovery and cognitive development in a clean, safe space, regardless of a family’s ability to pay admission.

How Does My Gift Help?
Sponsored Admission Program
The Museum’s Sponsored Admission Program accounts for 8,000 visitors annually, or 11 percent of VDM’s total admissions each year. This program allows underserved children and families to utilize VDM’s space and gallery resources free of charge on daily visits and group field trips through their affiliations with 54 social service agencies. Your gift helps us keep this program vibrant for these visitors and partner groups, expand its benefits to new organizations, and support the critical work of those local agencies.
The Museum has launched a new initiative to better serve the needs of an increasing number of visitors with physical and neurological differences. Your gift helps adapt exhibits, programs, and events to have a broader impact.
Field Trips, Programs & Scholarships
VDM offers enrichment and learning opportunities through Field Trips and educational programs like weekly Drop-Ins for children 6 months to age 8, after-school Discovery Workshops for ages 4 and older and Young Explorers classes for ages 5 and older, and half-day Camps for ages 4 to 8. Your gift helps us stock craft supplies, STEM components, and other educational materials; continuously improve the quality of our program offerings; introduce new programs; and provide scholarships for fee-based classes and camps.
Exhibit Maintenance & Development
The Museum currently maintains 15 hands-on educational play areas over 6,000 square feet of exhibit space. Your gift helps us keep exhibit components in working order, create new exhibit spaces, and ensure a safe, clean environment where children can enjoy exploratory and imaginative play.
