The Virginia Discovery Museum is proud to partner with Charlottesville Symphony to present interactive, hands-on musical education programs to visitors. Learn about the brass, percussion, string, and woodwind families of instruments as we meet different musicians, listen to musical storytimes, and enjoy instrument demonstrations.

Saturday, Jan. 25  |  10:30-11:30 a.m.  |  Featuring: Freeda the Cheetah

All Ages (with Adult): Who is the world’s very best hide-and-seek player? Join percussionist I-Jen Fang and guest reader Linda Smith as they search the African savanna for the crafty Freeda the Cheetah. Then try to create your own sound with a variety of percussion instruments during an instrument “petting zoo”.

Ayn Balija, Principal Violist

Saturday, Feb. 22  |  10:30-11:30 a.m.  |  Featuring: Giraffes Can’t Dance

All Ages (with Adult): Gerald the giraffe longs to go to the great Jungle Dance, but he can’t tango or two-step. Join violist Ayn Balija and guest reader Ryan MacPherson as they reveal how Gerald dares to dream. Then try out your own dance moves with guest dancer Exodis Ward from Charlottesville Ballet.

General Policies

Program Participants
  • Program participants with any of these symptoms are asked to refrain from visiting the Museum.
  • No registration required, but space is limited on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • No food, gum, or drinks are allowed in the Museum, except water bottles.

Program Schedule
  • 10:25-10:30 a.m.: Program Announcement
    • Program takes place in Creation Station, located at the end of the ABC Hallway.
    • No registration required, but space is limited on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • 10:30-11:30 a.m.: Storytime & Instrument Demonstration
  • 11:30 a.m.: Program Ends
    • All participants must exit Creation Station.
    • Creation Station will no longer be accessible, but families may continue to play in the Museum’s front and back galleries.


Frequently Asked Questions

Germ Concerns

How often is the Museum cleaned?

Creation Station is cleaned following all scheduled programs, and the entire Museum is cleaned daily. A cleaning crew will be on site after the Museum closes at 5:00 p.m. to clean and sanitize.

Program Access

Does Tunes & Tales require registration?

Tunes & Tales is included with Museum admission and does not require registration, but space is limited on a first-come, first-served basis.

Can we play in the Museum before and after Tunes & Tales?

Admission to the Museum includes all-day play, so your family may come and go as much as you wish before and after the program until the Museum closes at 5:00 p.m.

Parking

Where can I park to visit the Museum and attend Tunes & Tales?

VDM validates parking for Museum visitors at the Market Street Garage and Water Street Garage. Both locations provide the first hour of parking for free, and program participants receive an additional hour of free parking – for a total of two hours – when they request a validation ticket at VDM’s front desk. The Museum is also located next to the Downtown Transit Station, and Charlottesville Area Transit offers a Free Trolley that stops at the station as it travels through Downtown and the University of Virginia.
