Summer Service Program for High School Students

Love working with young children? Interested in STEAM education? Want to get involved in your local community? The Virginia Discovery Museum is looking for enthusiastic interns to join our team from June through August during our busiest season! VDM welcomes 70,000 visitors each year, and interns will interact with visitors, facilitate learning through exploration and play in the Museum’s 15 exhibit areas, and assist with educational programs, summer camps, and birthday parties, all while gaining high school service credit and valuable work experience.

Be High School Students
Submit Applications by May 31
Commit to at Least 25 Service Hours
Attend an Orientation (June 1-5)

Intern Responsibilities

Museum Teen Interns serve in various roles, including as gallery helpers, program and birthday party assistants, and summer camp counselors. Both weekday and Saturday shifts are available.

Galleries & Programs

Museum Hours: Mon-Sat, 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Date Night Drop-Offs: Third Fridays, 5:00-9:00 p.m. Shifts: 2-4 Hours Once or Twice Weekly.


  • Greet visitors and and facilitate learning through exploration and play.
  • Maintain a safe, tidy, and attractive Museum environment.
  • Assist with pop-up programming in Creation Station.
  • Help Museum staff with exhibit maintenance and repair.
  • Prepare activities for camps and open art studio hours in Creation Station.
  • Assist with monthly Date Night Drop-Off programs.
  • Assist with Saturday Birthday Parties, including setup and breakdown, preparing themed activities for STEM and Art parties, greeting guests, and assisting with party activities.
Summer Camps

Summer Camp Schedule: Mon-Fri, 8:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Shifts: Must Commit to the Entire Camp Week. (Camp Dates)


  • Greet campers and help them adapt to the camp environment.
  • Prepare and set up camp crafts and activities and assist campers.
  • Supervise campers during playtime in the Museum galleries.
  • Monitor camper lunch hour from 12:00-1:00 p.m.
  • Facilitate learning through exploration and play.
  • Maintain a safe, tidy, and attractive Museum environment.
