Summer Service Program for High School Students

Love working with young children? Interested in STEAM education? Want to get involved in your local community? Each summer, the Virginia Discovery Museum looks for enthusiastic high school interns to join our team from June through August! Interns facilitate learning through exploration and play in VDM’s hands-on exhibit galleries; assist with Summer Camps and various other educational programs; and help set up, monitor, and clean after weekend birthday parties, all while gaining high school service credit, workforce readiness training, and valuable job experience.

Requirements

All Applicants Must …

Be High School Students
Apply No Later Than April 30
Attend a Short Interview & Orientation
Commit to at Least 25 Service Hours

Intern Responsibilities

Museum Teen Interns serve in various roles, including as Gallery Helpers and Summer Camp Assistants. Both weekday and Saturday shifts are available. Other opportunities may be discussed as needed.

Gallery Helpers

Shifts: 2-4 Hours, 1-3 Times Per Week.
Mondays-Saturdays, Between 9:30 a.m.-5:15 p.m.

Responsibilities

  • Greet Museum visitors and create a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Interact with children and facilitate learning through exploration and play.
  • Maintain a safe, tidy, and attractive Museum environment.
  • Assist Museum staff with implementing educational programs, preparing Summer Camp materials, readying the Museum for weekend birthday parties and private events, and performing exhibit maintenance and repair as needed.
Summer Camp Assistants

Shifts: Must Commit to an Entire Camp Week (Dates)
Monday-Friday, 8:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m.

Responsibilities

  • Greet campers and help them adapt to the camp environment.
  • Prepare and set up camp crafts and activities and assist campers.
  • Supervise campers during playtime in the Museum galleries.
  • Monitor camper lunch hour.
  • Facilitate learning through exploration and play.
  • Maintain a safe, tidy, and attractive Museum environment.

Museum policies about shift arrival and check-in, illness and absences, and appropriate clothing.

Parking & Directions

VDM validates parking for interns’ full shifts at both the Market Street Garage and Water Street Garage.

Most CAT bus routes, including the Free Trolley, stop at the Downtown Transit Station next to the Museum.
