Education Manager

Full-Time Position. 40 Hours/Week, Mon-Fri, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Occasional Weekends to Attend Community Events.

The Virginia Discovery Museum Education Manager (EM) oversees all aspects of education and outreach at the Museum. The EM works to ensure that VDM’s mission is represented in its programs and exhibits, serves as a point of contact for community partnerships, and works to maintain VDM’s presence as an educational destination in Charlottesville. The ideal candidate must be outgoing and enthusiastic and enjoy working with children and families.


Programs & Education:

  • Manage VDM’s well-established and well-attended camp program, including registration, content development, resourcing, coordination with guest instructors, and implementation for eight summer camps and a spring break camp
  • Develop and implement weekly drop-in programming during the school year
  • Develop and implement special programming such as Date Night Drop-Off and holiday programs
  • Plan and implement Kid*Vention, VDM’s annual family science festival
  • Manage VDM’s StarLab portable planetarium outreach program
  • Manage group visits and field trips to the Museum
  • Oversee VDM’s participation in community events and festivals
  • Promote VDM’s special programs on radio, television, and social media
  • Work with exhibits staff to develop educational, interactive exhibits
  • Develop educational content for VDM’s blog and other publications
  • Maintain and stock VDM’s Creation Station art studio

Operations & Administrative

  • Assist in gallery opening, closing, and maintenance, including seasonal rotation of manipulatives and books
  • Assist with grant writing as it pertains to programs and educational goals
  • Order cleaning, office, and exhibit supplies

  • Strong educational background (education degree preferred).
  • At least 2-3 years of experience working in education, either in a classroom setting or in program management
