Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Program Registration

What if a Makers program I want to participate in has filled?

All Makers programs have a maximum capacity of 8 children. After a program has filled, we place children on a waiting list. Situations often arise in which a registered child is unable to attend the program. In the event of such cancellations, the Museum contacts families on the waiting list in the order their registration requests were received.

  2. Financial Assistance
    Financial Assistance

Does the Museum offer financial assistance for Makers programs?

Yes, scholarships are provided for Makers programs on a rolling scale based on financial need. If there is a financial hardship that would prevent your child from participating in a program, please contact Director of Operations Lindsay Jones at (434) 977-1025 x102 for scholarship information.

Would you like to support our scholarship fund? If you or your organization would like to donate to the Museum’s scholarship fund, please call (434) 977-1025 x102 or email, or mail a check payable to “Virginia Discovery Museum” indicating “Scholarship Fund.”

  3. Cancellations & Refunds

What is the Museum’s cancellation and refund policy?

A minimum of five students is required for a Makers program to run. If a program is canceled by the Museum due to insufficient enrollment, the registration fee will be refunded to all registrants. Individual registration cancellations must be made at least two business days before the beginning of the corresponding program in order to be eligible for a refund. If the cancellation causes the program roster to fall below the required minimum, the refund will be contingent upon the vacancy being filled. No refunds will be issued after a program begins.

Please note: Cancellations must be made by contacting Education Manager Maggie Hancock at (434) 977-1025 x106 or or by visiting the Museum at 524 East Main St. on the Downtown Mall.

  4. Arrival, Check-In & Pick-Up

Where can I park to drop my child off for a Makers program?

We suggest parking in the Market Street Garage or Water Street Garage. Both locations provide the first hour of parking for free, and the Museum will provide you and your guests with validation tickets for an additional hour of free parking, for a total of two free hours. Please visit the Plan Your Visit page for a parking map and directions to the garages.

When does check-in begin for Makers programs?

All Makers programs run from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Check-in starts at 3:55 p.m. at the Museum’s front desk. Please sign in before dropping off your child in Creation Station.

May parents and guardians leave the building or are they required to stay during the program period?

Parents and guardians are free to leave the building after dropping off children for a Makers program or they may stay in the Museum galleries to supervise a sibling until 5:00 p.m. Please be aware that the Museum will close to all visitors at 5:00 p.m., but parents and caregivers may return to the building for pick-up starting at 6:00 p.m. when the program concludes.
